Amir Nourian

About

I am a Reader (Associate Professor) in Mechanical Engineering. I received my MSc (in 2010) and PhD (2013) from the University of Salford (UoS). My PhD research was part of winning the prestigious award ‘Outstanding Contribution to Innovation and Technology’ from Times Higher Education (THE), and it was also part of the Technology Transfer scheme of the UoS for developing a start-up company. My PhD thesis was on designing and developing an eco-friendly valving arrangement for domestic aerosol sprays (i.e. hair spray) utilising ‘clean air’ propellant such as nitrogen as opposed to harmful Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). In 2013, I joined UoS as a full-time academic in mechanical engineering. My activities have significant overlap and interaction between Research and Innovation (R&I) and Enterprise, Knowledge Transfer, and Industry Collaboration, and the results can continuously support the Learning, Teaching, and Assessment (LTA). The main core of my research activities is on (i) spraying systems, (ii) CFD in thermal management and fluid mechanics, (iii) energy, (iv) environmental and air quality, and (v) new product development. My teaching modules are (1) engineering thermodynamics and fluid mechanics, (2) energy conservation and management, (3) energy utilisation, (4) mechanical group design, and (5) manufacturing. Currently, I am the Academic Lead of Research and Knowledge Exchange within the School of Science, Engineering, and Environment (SEE) for the Directorate of Computing, Science, and Engineering (CSE). I am also the Programme Leader of the BEng/MEng Mechanical Engineering. Furthermore, I am the associate head of the internationally recognised Spray Research Group (SRG) at the University of Salford, collaborating with large and SME companies and educational establishments nationally and internationally.
