Anne Gorden

About

Organic Synthesis, Catalysis, Supramolecular Chemistry, Molecular Recognition, Actinide Coordination Chemistry Anne “Annie” Gorden, a native of Texas, began her academic journey at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, where she completed a double major in Chemistry and Literature. She then returned to Texas to pursue her Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from The University of Texas at Austin under the guidance of Prof. Jonathan Sessler. Her collaborative Ph.D. research project required her to spend about half of her graduate research work working with actinides at Los Alamos National Laboratory and Argonne National Laboratory. She continued her research with a postdoctoral appointment at The University of California at Berkeley with Prof. Kenneth Raymond. She was later appointed the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Seaborg Center Postdoctoral Research Fellow. In 2005, she began her academic career in Organic Chemistry at Auburn University in Alabama, where she made significant contributions to the field. She has now moved to Texas Tech University in 2020 and was promoted to full professor in 2024. Prof. Gorden’s research, which is at the forefront of supramolecular chemistry, has been instrumental in the design of ligands for rapid identification of actinides like uranium and thorium in the environment. Her research group has also been pioneering in the exploration of transition metal complexes for C-H activation and oxidation reactions in aqueous media. Their current efforts are focused on water-soluble lanthanide complexes for 2 photon upconversion. This impactful work has been consistently supported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the U.S. Department of Energy, the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, and the National Science Foundation. Prof. Gorden's affiliation with the American Chemical Society national Women Chemists Committee further underscores her commitment to advancing the field.
