About
Dr. Christian G. Liu (刘玄睿, formerly 刘钢 / Gang Liu) is a postdoctoral researcher at Dalhousie University (戴尔豪斯大学)specializing in software engineering, artificial intelligence, business intelligence, big data, network security, smart contracts, and blockchain technologies. He earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Dalhousie University and holds master’s degrees from Concordia University and Dalhousie University, with expertise spanning blockchain systems, AI, BI, and software modeling. With more than 20 years of IT industry experience, Dr. Liu has held leadership and technical roles at Ericsson, CGI, IBM, and Samsung, contributing to mobile network maintenance, enterprise software development, and AI–blockchain integration. Dr. Liu’s research focuses on automating the transformation of BPMN business models into smart contracts through his novel DE-HSM multi-modal framework, which models concurrency with Discrete Elements (DE) and functionality with Hierarchical State Machines (HSM). This approach supports complex trade transactions and smart contract upgrades, leading to publications in Elsevier Blockchain: Research and Applications and ACM DLT. He is extending this work into Smart Contract as a Service (SCaaS), integrating NLP to translate business requirements into BPMN and then into executable contracts, and applying AI to improve scalability and security. Alongside research, Dr. Liu has made substantial teaching contributions. As a TA, he supported courses such as Introduction to Blockchains and Advanced Database Systems, Cloud Computing, authoring guides on MongoDB, Neo4j, and development frameworks, and delivering lectures that demonstrated clarity and strong organizational skills. His effectiveness led to multiple sessional instructor appointments at Dalhousie and Saint Mary’s. At Dalhousie, he taught CSCI 2133 Rapid Prototyping, CSCI 4140 Advanced Database Systems, and the graduate course CSCI 5408 Data Management, Warehousing, and Analytics, emphasizing both theoretical foundations and practical applications in AI-driven analytics. At Saint Mary’s, he taught MCDA 5560 Business Intelligence, focusing on data analysis, visualization, and forecasting methods, supported by hands-on use of tools such as Tableau. Across these roles, Dr. Liu has been recognized for clear communication, effective use of software tools, and dedication to student success.
