Power and pitfalls of trace element geochemistry in zircon from high-temperature–high-pressure rocks: Some examples from NW Spain

About
Francisco José Fernández obtained a degree (1988) and a PhD (1994) in Geology from the University of Oviedo. Between July and December 1990, He was Ensign of the Infantry Complement at the Cabo Noval (Noreña) Barracks of the 31st BRILAT company. Between 1994 and 1995, He was awarded a fellowship from the institute INDUROT (University of Oviedo) and a postdoctoral fellowship from the Spanish Ministry to work at the experimental deformation laboratory at the University of Manchester, UK. From 1996 until 2006, He was an Associate Professor, and from January to November 2006 until 2006, He was a professor contracted with a PhD at the University of Oviedo. His research lines include micro-tectonics, active and relief tectonics, paleo-seismicity, high P and T terrains, and kinematic analysis of folding. His research career began in 1989 with the structural analysis of the high-grade metamorphic terrains of the Iberian Massif (Complejo de Cabo Ortegal) under the direction of Professor A. Marcos. In 1994, under the direction of Professor E.H. Rutter, He completed my training in microstructural analysis, specializing in the analysis of tectonic fabrics with special attention to the crystallographic preferred orientation of calcite, publishing various methodological and micro-tectonic studies of the Iberian Peninsula, the Urals, and the Dominican Republic, that interpret regional structures through the analysis of tectonic fabrics. He is currently working on tectonics related to crustal-scale faults, based on fieldwork and data obtained from analysis of conventional light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SSD BSD, CL detectors), and electronic microprobe analysis. In addition, as a member of the Oviedo Fold Analysis Research Group, He investigated the kinematics and mechanics of folding, with special attention to regional-scale recumbent folds. Finally, He has started a research line about the relationships between tectonics and relief. Specifically, He investigates the rock avalanches related to the current reactivation of faults by quantifying the fractal dimension of block size distribution in deposits and fault crushing zones, seeking to establish their relationship with the earthquakes' intensity and the affected folds' kinematics. The regional environment where I developed these analyses is the Cantabrian Zone in the Iberian Peninsula and the Caribbean Arc in the Hispaniola Island. In the professional field, He has prepared geotechnical and environmental reports and publications of the territory's linear works and planning and management work. He has developed and projected an indoor mine for the exploitation of roofing slates in the Sinclinorio de Truchas (León). He has modeled the Uranium of the Mina Fé deposit (Ciudad Rodrigo), establishing its kinematic relationship with the Grafitosa Fault. He is assessing the viability of a magnesium mining deposit in Borobia (Soria) by studying the vulnerability of the affected territory in terms of the mining project. He is the author of 24 publications in the Science Citation Index (SCI) and books, book chapters, and articles published in other journals (48). He has been the editor of special volumes, books, and magazines and a reviewer of numerous articles for different scientific journals. He has participated in 20 competitive research projects and 12 company-funded projects and has been the Principal Investigator of 8 projects. He has been an evaluator of ANECA for the accreditation program for professors of Spanish universities (Period 2013-16). He has presented 36 conference papers and 6 invited conferences. He has also been a member of the organizing committee of various conferences. He has taught Degree, MSc, and PhD courses, especially at the University of Oviedo and other universities. In addition, He has given courses and talks for public organizations and companies and has been an evaluator of Degrees, Masters, and PhDs. He has supervised and been a Final Degree Project and MSc theses evaluating committee member. According to Scopus, He has 88 publications (29 included in the Web of Science) cited 292 times, and his h-index is 9. My ORCID code is 0000-0001-9405-1981.
