Frederik Herman

About

Frederik Herman completed his dissertation on twentieth-century school culture at the University of Leuven, Belgium, in 2010. He joined the FAMOSO (Fabricating Modern Societies) project at the University of Luxembourg as a postdoctoral researcher in March 2013 and was a member of the Institute of Education and Society and later of the Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History until February 2018. He has been a lecturer at the School of Education of the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (PH FHNW) since March 2018 and the Schwyz University of Teacher Education (PH Schwyz) since June 2019. At both institutions, he has introduced future primary school teachers to a variety of subjects including general pedagogy (Allgemeine Pädagogik), histories of education (Historische Pädagogik) and childhood studies. His research focuses on visual, material, spatial and cultural histories of education. His publications have dealt with topics such as material school culture (e.g. school buildings, school desks, notebooks, apparatuses for measuring and training bodies and minds); and educational thoughts (history of mentalities), school practices and policies (e.g. punishment and disciplinary regimes); educational reform and scientification of education; psychophysiology, professional orientation and vocational training; cultural learning, heritage making, identity construction and nation building; and public histories of education. He has contributed articles to the Oxford Review of Education, Paedagogica Historica, History of Education, the European Journal of Education, Asclepio – Revista de Historia de la Medicina y de la Ciencia, Jahrbuch für Historische Bildungsforschung and Zeitschrift für Pädagogik. In the last five years he has guest- and co-edited the following special issues: Adventures in Cultural Learning (Paedagogica Historica, 2017; together with Sian Roberts); Bodies and Minds in Education (History of Education, 2019; together with Michèle Hofmann) and Cultivating Children and Youth: Transnational Explorations of the Urban and the Natural (History of Education, 2020; together with Ian Grosvenor and Sian Roberts), as well as the following volumes of essays: Fabricating Modern Societies: Education, Bodies, and Minds in the Age of Steel (2019; together with Karin Priem); Folds of Past, Present and Future: Reconfiguring Contemporary Histories of Education (2021; together with Sarah Van Ruysekensvelde, Geert Thyssen, Angelo Van Gorp and Pieter Verstraete); and Exhibiting the Past: Public Histories of Education (2022; together with Sjaak Braster and Maria del Mar del Pozo Andrés). He is serving as a peer reviewer for major international journals including History of Education and Paedagogica Historica and for organisations such as the Swiss National Science Foundation. Since 2019 he has also served as a member of ISCHE’s Scientific Committee. Currently Frederik Herman is head of the organising committee of the International Histories of Education Doctoral Summer School (EERA, ISCHE, History of Education Society, Stichting Paedagogica Historica), which will take place in Zurich in 2023. In 2022 he was invited to join the core-team of the recently founded History of Educational Ecologies International Research Group (HEC).
