Giacomo Tommei

Giacomo Tommei (born 26 March 1978) is Associate Professor of Mathematical Physics at the Department of Mathematics of the University of Pisa. He got his Ph.D. in Mathematics in 2006 from the University of Pisa discussing a thesis about some theoretical and computational results for the Impact Monitoring (of Near-Earth Asteroids) problem. Then, he got a temporary research position at ISTI-CNR (National Research Council) to develop innovative orbit determination algorithms for space debris. In 2007 he obtained a 4-year research fellowship from University of Pisa to work on the radio science experiments of the BepiColombo and Juno interplanetary space missions. After a 1-year experience as co-CEO of a private company operating in the field of space mechanics, he got a permanent position as Assistant Professor of Mathematical Physics at University of Pisa in 2011 (until 2017). The expertise of Giacomo Tommei is in the field of Orbit Determination, both of natural objects, like asteroids and comets (including impact monitoring) and artificial objects, like space debris or spacecraft and satellites. He is a member of the NEODyS team and a developer of the OrbFit software. He is also a developer of the ORBIT14 software, an Italian software (funded by the Italian Space Agency) to perform radio science experiments using data of the BepiColombo and Juno missions. The asteroid 2002AM was renamed (89735)Tommei in recognition of his contributions in asteroids studies.
