About
I am an Associate Professor of Inclusive Social Research and have been involved in projects at the SSRU since May 2013 and joined the EPPI-Centre at the SSRU in August 2014. Prior to pursuing a career in academia, I had extensive experience in the commercial world, working in media and television. I am a mixed-methods researcher who works on a number of collaborative projects in the field of inclusive research, public involvement in research, medicine, public health and methods development for evidence-based health policy creation. I have a particular interest in research that focuses on children's involvement, diversity and underrepresented communities, particularly African heritage and mixed-ethnicity communities and the impact of missing medical histories on personal medical decisions. My research expertise covers a variety of qualitative and systematic reviewing research methods. I have published, and teach, on various topics including: discourse analysis (all types); research methods development; thematic and framework synthesis; evidence mapping methods, Bakhtinian theory; intrapersonal role conflict theory; children's rights; and developing methods for children's involvement in medicines research. I now conduct health and social equity focused systematic reviews, and primary research, with topics including: - impact of medical conditions on various demographic groups - health benefits of improved domestic services - equity and representation in research - decolonisation of research methods and the academic environment - artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on equity I completed my PhD on children's participation in medicines research and development. Alongside my academic career, I am a qualified herbal practitioner and medical ethnobotanist, with qualifications in environmental, medical and social anthropology. I am a trained professional coach, where I coach both staff and students and mentor young people, particularly supporting African and Caribbean heritage young people pursue careers in STEM. I hold editorial roles for two journals that cover my areas of expertise; as an Editor of the Journal of Ethnic and Racial Studies, and an Associate Editor of the journal Research for All.
