Helen Koechlin

About

PD Dr. Helen Koechlin is a research group leader at the University Children's Hospital Zurich, Switzerland. Her research focuses on risk and resilience factors that contribute to the development and maintenance of ill-health, specifically on the role of emotions and emotion-related processes. In addition, she assesses how psychological health promotion can be implemented on different levels (e.g., at the individual or organizational level). In a current study, Helen Koechlin assesses psychosocial factors on the child and the parent level with regard to their contribution to pain chronification following major surgery. To prevent pain chronification, Helen Koechlin has developed a preventive online intervention for families whose child has to undergo major surgery. The program - currently being prepared for testing in a clinical trial - has been co-designed with former patients and their parents, as collaborations with patients and caregivers are an integral part of Helen Koechlin's research. Helen Koechlin completed her Habilitation entitled "Trajectories, characteristics, and treatment of mental and physical conditions in childhood and adolescence" in 2023, and was granted the Venia Docendi in Psychology from the University of Basel. She conducted her PhD-related research mostly at Boston Children's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, USA, and remained affiliated with its Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care and Pain Medicine until 2023. Her current and past research has been funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, and has received attention from both the scientific community and the wider public. Helen Koechlin has extensive experience in teaching and supervision on the Bachelor, Master, and PhD level, has developed lectures, seminars, and workshops, and holds a Certificate in Educational Development from the University of Basel. In 2022, Helen Koechlin has completed a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Child and Adolescent Psychology at the University of Basel.
