JAVIER SUÁREZ
About
Philosopher of biology working as a Lecturer at the Department of Philosophy at the University of Oviedo (Spain). I am the PI of "X-Philes – An Exploration of the Philosophy of Lineages in the light of Contemporary Biology" (Ministry of Economy and Innovativeness, PID2022-137993NA-I00), and "On-ETTI – An Ontological Examination of the Evolutionary Transitions in Individuality" (Fundación BBVA, SV-23-FBBVA-1, Beca Leonardo, see https://www.redleonardo.es/beneficiario/javier-suarez-diaz/). In these projects, I investigate ontological questions about the nature of biological evolution, with special emphasis on the ontological foundations of lineage and hierarchical thinking, as well as the epistemological limitations of some methodologies currently used in the life sciences. Before joining Oviedo, I was the PI of the NCN-funded project "MULTISPECIES – Network modelling of multispecies systems: Ontological and epistemological implications", at Jagiellonian University in Krakow (Poland, 2021-2023), and a postdoctoral researcher at Bielefeld University, working on a project on dispositional practices in the life sciences (2020-2023). I hold a PhD in Philosophy from Egenis, University of Exeter (United Kingdom), and a second PhD from LOGOS, University of Barcelona (Spain). In addition to my current research projects, my main research interests include the nature of scientific practice (explanation, description, modeling), the metaphysics of causation, the role of dispositions in the life sciences, and the ontology of biological evolution. I am very interested in exploring each of these topics in the context of multispecies biological systems (holobionts, biofilms). I am happy to supervise PhD students in any of these areas.
