Jimmy Chun Yu Louie

About

Jimmy is an Associate Professor and Discipline Lead of Dietetics at the Department of Allied Health of the Swinburne University of Technology. Jimmy has a strong track record in nutritional epidemiology as evidenced by his publications in this area, and he is best known for his research on the association between carbohydrate nutrition (specifically glycaemic index and added sugar consumption) and health outcomes. He developed a systematic methodology for added sugar estimation which was considered a gold standard and widely adopted by researchers around the world, and more recently he further developed a machine-learning-based approach for automatical added sugar estimation which allows easy estimation of the added sugar content of large numbers of packaged foods. He has published widely on the topics of glycaemic index and added/free sugar and related public health nutrition research, with more than 1335 papers, 5800 citations and an h-index of 43 within 13 years of the award of his PhD degree. A/Prof Louie is a generalist in nutrition and dietetics research, with experience in managing and conducting randomized dietary trials in pregnant women at risk of or suffering from gestational diabetes in a hospital setting; a meal-delivery-based dietary trial examining the effect of low glycaemic index diets on daylong glycaemia in healthy adults; as well as acute feeding studies examining the effect of functional foods on postprandial glycaemia and flow-mediated dilatation. His lab has recently obtained external competitive funding to conduct an intergenerational lifelong study to examine the effect of chronic sucrose consumption on the metabolic health of three generations of mice. In another recent externally funded study, his lab analyzed the nutritional composition of >300 local food samples to enable the statistical assessment of intakes of various nutrients of the local Hong Kong population using data from the 1st food consumption survey.
