Professor Jon Friedland is Vice-President (Research & Innovation) at City St George’s, University of London having been Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Enterprise) at St. George's, University of London. Previously, he was Hammersmith Campus Director (2010-18) and Head of Infectious Diseases and Immunity (2004-18) at Imperial College London which he joined in 1994 (then the Royal Postgraduate Medical School). He was an honorary consultant in Infectious Diseases at St George’s Hospital University NHS Trust having previously been Chief of Clinical Infection at Hammersmith Hospitals NHS Trust. His major research interests are in development of host mediated therapies targeting innate immune responses in tuberculosis and in migrant health. He has published over 250 peer reviewed papers, invited editorials and reviews, and edited 3 books. Jon Friedland was awarded the Royal College of Physicians Weber-Parkes Prize Medal for research in tuberculosis in 2005 and was elected Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2008. He was elected President of the British Infection Society (2007-09). He was made FRCPI in 2010. In 2017, he was awarded an inaugural Fellowship of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID). He was elected to the ESCMID Executive Committee in 2020 where he served as Scientific Affairs Officer until 2024. He is President-elect and Secretary General of ESCMID until 2026 when he will become ESCMID President. He is currently a non-executive board member of the UK Health Security Agency and also chairs the Science & Research Committee and sits on the Audit & Risk Committee. He was previously Vice-Chair of the Commission for Human Medicines, Chair of the MHRA Expert Advisory Group on Infection and Chair of the MHRA Covid-19 Therapeutics Expert Working Group. He has also served on the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation and The Chief Medical Officers National Expert Panel on New and Emerging Infections as well as on many grants committees including for the Medical Research Council (UK) and The Wellcome Trust.
