Kieran O'Meara

About

Kieran is a PhD candidate in International Relations and graduate teaching assistant at the University of St Andrews, funded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) through the Scottish Graduate School of Social Sciences (SGSSS). Prior to this, he completed a BA (Hons) in International Relations from the University of Kent, as well as a MLitt in International Political Theory from The University of St. Andrews. In addition to his research and teaching roles, Kieran is Director and Editor-at-Large at E-International Relations, the world’s leading open-access publication for students and scholars of international relations. He features weekly as the host of the internationally popular Thinking Global Podcast. Kieran is available for public outreach and media engagement. Kieran's research interests are broadly centred on international relations theory, political theory, the ‘English School’ of international relations, political violence, pacifism, revolution, global social movements and the study of transnational non-state actors. Kieran’s current project, titled "Revolutionism and International Society for the Twenty-First Century: Exploring Transnational Revolutionary Groups and the Institutions of International Society," delves into the role of violent and non-violent transnational revolutionary groups (TRGs) to uncover the meaning of their practices on the intersection of ‘international’ and ‘world’ society. Kieran's work seeks to reinterpret, rearticulate and apply neglected aspects of the English School’s conceptual framework to contemporary global politics, namely the concept of ‘Revolutionism' to various TRGs. His interdisciplinary approach emphasizes methodological pluralism, employing interpretive, archival, exegetical, and interview-based methods. Additionally, Kieran’s broader intellectual interests include philosophical hermeneutics, the study of social movements, political violence, the intersection of critical film theory and international political thought, and psephology.
