About
I am a biophysicist whose aim is develop novel experimental tool to study the mechanism of membrane proteins, in particular transporters and respiratory enzymes. I graduated in Biology (specialisation biochemistry) from the Utrecht University , the Netherlands in 1995 and did my PhD at the University of Leiden till 1999 on structure-function relationship of metalloproteins. After a Post Doc position at the University of Oxford with Prof. Fraser Armstrong, FRS, I received a 5-year BBSRC David Phillips fellowship to work at the University of Leeds in 2002. Building my independent academic career in Leeds, I received an ERC fellowship in 2012. I became Professor of Molecular Biophysics in 2017 and moved to Leiden University, the Netherlands in 2021. My research group has currently the following long-term projects: (i) the mechanisms of respiratory enzymes in bacteria for application in solar biofuel manufacture and novel antibiotic targets, (ii) the molecular mechanism of proton pumping in respiratory enzymes in mitochondria and bacteria, (iii) the development of novel bioelectrocatalytic surfaces using respiratory membrane enzymes and (iv) the development of novel diagnostics to fight antimicrobial resistance (AMR). I have trained over 15 postgraduate and postdoctoral research scientists, published over 80 peer-reviewed articles with an h-index of 26 and regularly deliver invited and keynote lectures internationally. I am a core panel member for the BBSRC and sit on the management boards of the BBSRC network, CBMNet (2016 -) and the RSC interest group, IBDG (2012 -) and I sit on the one of the research area panels of the Biochemical Society. I have (co-)organised several national and international conferences, including for the IBDG, the International Society for Electrochemistry (ISE) and the Lorentz Centre (Leiden). I was elected as a fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (2015).
