About

Paulo Frias da Costa has a Degree in Architecture from the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto (1989), a Master Degree in Interactive Apps from Elisava - Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona (2002) and a PhD in Communicaction Sciences from the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences of the New University of Lisbon (2010). He was a Research Member of CETAC.MEDIA - Communication Sciences and Technologies Centre and CIC.Digital - Porto, investigating the implications of Social Media Platforms in Online Journalism routines. His main research topics are Social Media, Social Networks, Online Journalism, Virtual Worlds and Cyberculture. Related to this areas, he has published both nationally and internationally in peer review journals, book chapters and conferences proceedings. He's been a Professor since 2003 in Communication Sciences and Journalism areas at the University of Porto, and he's teaching now in the Bachelor and Master Degrees of Communication Sciences, Master in Multimedia, PhD in Information and Communication in Digital Platforms (with the University of Aveiro) and PhD in Digital Media (with New University of Lisbon and University of Texas in Austin). Between 2012 and 2014, he's been the Director of both Bachelor and Master Degrees in Communication Sciences at the faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto. He's also a member of the Journalism and Communication Sciences Department of the Faculty. He's been evolved in several scientific projects and partnerships, namely the Project Público/P3, where he was vice-director from 2011 to 2015. He's been, as a researcher representing University of Porto and the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, one of the members of the transnational project IJIE - Integrated Journalism in Europe (2010/2012). He also collaborates as a researcher in the project CHIC - Cooperative Holistic View on Internet and Content, a project funded by Compete 2020 and Portugal 2020. He represents the Faculty and the University in the COPE project - Creating a MOOC about EU cohesion policies for journalism students and journalists, funded by the EU and starting in Jan 2023. He is, since 2020, the Director of JPN-JornalismoPortoNet (jpn.up.pt), a journalistic site based in the Bachelor and Master Degrees in Communication Sciences at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities from Porto's University.
