Stefano Locatelli

About

I am a historian of late medieval Europe and the Mediterranean, specialising in the monetary history of the Italian peninsula between 1200 and 1500. My research treats money and its most direct manifestation, coinage, as a product of human activity, and explores the complexities of its interlinked social, cultural, and political dimensions. I hold a PhD in Economic and Social History from the University of Manchester. Prior to joining the University of Milan as Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Postdoctoral Fellow (Global) in January 2025, I was awarded research fellowships by the Italian Institute for Historical Studies in Naples, the UK Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the Italian Academy for Advanced Studies at Columbia University, the British School at Rome (declined) and the Leverhulme Trust (Early Career Fellowship at Queen Mary University of London). From the end of 2022 to 2024, I was Assistant Professor of Economic History at the University of Parma as part of the 'Next Generation EU' scheme. My work has appeared in outlets such as The Numismatic Chronicle and Revue Numismatique. I am also co-editor of the series The Italian Coins in the British Museum, and I have coordinated or collaborated on various projects with Princeton University, The British Museum, and the Ashmolean Museum at Oxford.
