Toby Raeburn

About

Associate Professor Toby Raeburn lives in Sydney, where he works with the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Paramedicine at the Australian Catholic University in North Sydney, NSW, Australia. After studying theology and church history early in his career, Toby spent two decades working in mental healthcare, with a focus on assisting people seeking to overcome homelessness and other social challenges. During that time, he founded Australia’s first mental health nursing charity 'ROAM Communities', which he led from 2005-2015 (ROAM was an acronym for Recovery through Ownership Action and Management). Toby has provided consultancy to a wide range of organizations', including, Sydney City Council, the Salvation Army, the NSW Department of Housing, NSW Department of Justice, and many others. His work in community mental health has led to several awards, some of which include a Fellowship and Mental Health Nurse Achievement Award from the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses, a Churchill Fellowship from the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust and a Mental Health Matters Award from the Mental Health Association of NSW. While working with people who were homeless, Toby became interested in research, and after completing his PhD in 2017, he has published over sixty peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters related to mental healthcare, homelessness, and history. Toby is particularly interested in the empowering potential of history, which he believes can improve our ability to cope with the present and be used to develop a vision and a sense of purpose for the future. In 2023 Toby was proud to release his first book. Titled, 'The Remarkable Mr and Mrs Johnson' it explores the lives of colonial New South Wales’s first Christian chaplain, the Reverend Richard Johnson and his wife, Mary. Drawing heavily on eighteenth and nineteenth-century sources, the book traces early influences that led the Johnsons to join the First Fleet, then describes their pioneering work in colonial NSW from 1788-1800, founding the first schools, building the first church, and initiating British charity. At the same time, the Johnson's also built a remarkable friendship with a young Aboriginal girl named Boorong, who became an influential intermediary during the early years of colonization. Their lives have something to teach us about adaptation, survival, and humility. Published by Australian Scholarly Press, the book can be purchased at: https://scholarly.info/book/the-remarkable-mr-and-mrs-johnson/
