Tomos’ particular research interest is in identifying ornamental plants that might escape gardens and become invasive in the wild. His research focus is in engaging the public in environmental issues (mainly invasive species) and in science communication. This was the purpose of his exhibit at the Royal Horticultural Society's Chelsea Flower Show in 2019 with the University of Reading. The exhibit was called 'Ornamental plants: our 'future invaders'?' in the Discovery Zone. Tomos sits on the Media and Communication Working Group for INVASIVESNET and the GB Non-Native Species Secretariat. He has also participated in the most recent Horizon Scan for GB (2019) looking at potentially invasive species. Tomos works with the North Wales Wildlife Trust as the Garden Escapers Project Manager. He led on the development of the Ecosystem Invaders campaign with the aim of increasing awareness of invasive species and their impacts in Wales.
