Wenjian Pan

About

Wenjian Pan is an Associate Professor in Sustainable Architecture, Ecological Urbanism, and Humanities. He is now teaching in the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), Wuhan, China. Pan obtained his Doctor of Philosophy (Urban Renewal & Sustainability) in the Department of Architecture at The University of Hong Kong (HKU). Prior to joining the faculty team of HUST, he had worked for HKU’s Urban Ecologies Design Lab (UEDL) for eight years and been involved in several social research projects with taking the role of main researcher, project manager and coordinator, as well as curatorial assistant. Pan views urban and humanistic phenomena from a systematic and interdisciplinary perspective and adopt mixed methods for investigations. His research explores the deep operational mechanisms of human settlements and their impacts on city ecosystems. Based on his studies and findings, he established a theoretical framework of “Shared Urban Ecologies.” His current research interest examines the diverse environmental performances of the overlooked informal dwelling systems in high-density metropolises of Asia through digitally documenting the interactions between their complex morphologies, dynamic communities, and diverse environmental performances, aiming to provide detailed technical guidelines for the establishment of intelligent urban management system. Recently, he has also been involved in a large-scale social impact project entitled “Housing in Place: Quality Living in Sustainable Hong Kong” (funded by Bank of China Hong Kong and in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity, local NGOs, and built industries), and been awarded as “Viser Expert” by Viser Technology Pte. Ltd. (Singapore) for his research’s inclusiveness and social impacts. He has also been invited to be serve as Editor-in-Chief of Urban Environment and Ecological Planning (ISSN: 2977-8476), Academic Editor of the International Journal of Architectural Engineering Technology, Guest Editor of Journal of Chinese Architecture and Urbanism (ISSN: 2717-5626), Editorial Board Member of Social Sciences & Humanities Open (ISSN: 2590-2911), and Executive Editorial Board Member of Landscape Architecture Frontiers (ISSN: 2096-336X). Currently, his individual and team research outcomes have been presented in Europe, Australia, and Asia, and published in leading international journals and books in the architectural and urban studies.
