Alexander Settles

About

Dr. Alex Settles is a Clinical Associate Professor of Entrepreneurship in the Department of Management and the Academic Director of the Thomas S. Johnson Master of Science in Entrepreneurship (MSE) at the Warrington College of Business, University of Florida. Previously he was an Assistant Professor of Professional Practice and an Instructor in the Department of Management and Global Business at Rutgers Business School, an Instructor at Nevada State College, a Professor of Corporate Governance and Strategic Management, and the Deputy Director of the Corporate Governance Center at the National Research University Higher School of Economics in Moscow, Russia, and Assistant Policy Scientist at the University of Delaware. During the 2005-2006 academic year, Dr. Settles was a Fulbright Scholar in Russia. Dr. Settles is an affiliated faculty member of UF’s Entrepreneurship and Innovation Center and has participated in entrepreneurship outreach activities such as the center’s outreach program to local Gainesville entrepreneurs (GEAP) and the Veteran Entrepreneurship Program. He has also led the Silicon Valley program that connects MSE students with UF alumni working in Silicon Valley and in 2022 Austin, Texas. Dr. Settles has served as a consultant to the World Bank Institute, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, and the Center for International Private Enterprise. Dr. Settles’ research focuses on three areas: the role that non-market forces shape the internationalization process of firms, emerging market multinationals, management practices in emerging market firms, entrepreneurship education practices, and the development of entrepreneurial intentions of university students. Dr. Settles’ research has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as the Strategic Management Journal, International Journal for Human Resource Management, International Journal of Organizational Analysis, Academy of Entrepreneurship Journal, and International Studies of Management and Organization. He has also published book chapters on entrepreneurship and research methods. He currently serves on the editorial board of the Journal of East-West Business and as the chair of the Membership Drive Committee of the International Management Division of the Academy of Management. He is a member of the Academy of International Business, Academy of Management, and the Strategic Management Society. Dr. Settles currently teaches courses in entrepreneurship, global management strategy, strategic management, venture capital, and organizational behavior at the University of Florida and previously taught management, international business, financial management, strategy, corporate governance, business ethics, and new venture creation.
