About
I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Fisheries and Aquaculture from the University of Uyo, Nigeria, where I investigated the growth performance of Clarias gariepinus using both on-farm and commercial feeds. Following this, I spent five years as a Research Assistant at the same institution, developing skills in experimental design, statistical analysis, data interpretation, and scientific writing. My work centred on sustainable aquaculture and the effects of anthropogenic pollution in freshwater and marine environments. Motivated by a desire to understand microplastic impacts, I pursued an MSc in Pollution and Environmental Control at the University of Manchester as a Commonwealth Scholar, focusing on microplastic distribution and accumulation in the River Tame, Greater Manchester. This experience deepened my interest in micro/nanoplastics and their interaction with aquatic organisms, leading to a second MSc in Marine Biological Resources at Ghent University as an Erasmus Mundus Scholar. My research included identifying microfibres in commercial fish guts along the South African coast, examining pharmaceutical effects on calanoid copepods, and investigating tissue-level changes in Mytilus edulis exposed to a wide range of pollutants, including microplastics. Now undertaking a PhD as a President Doctoral Scholar at the University of Manchester, under the supervision of Prof. Holly Shiels, Dr. Cyrill Bussy, and Dr. Ian Kane, my research explores how microplastics, their ecocorona properties, and environmental factors affect the health and development of freshwater teleosts. I remain dedicated to advancing research in aquatic ecotoxicology and contributing to the broader goals of environmental sustainability and conservation.
